Tony, this is great to get these things listed in one nice tidy place – thanks. I think many of us are aware of several of them, but to have it formalized like this is great encouragement to put some of these things into action. We just started using the 3 month mail order option for insulin, and I was surprised that the copay was the same as a one month supply. For whatever reason, I assumed that although it would be less than the copay for three individual months, it would still be more than just one month. The FSA option is another thing I have been lazy about. It really does pay off to plan a little at the beginning of the year and set those dollars aside. With diabetes, it isn’t even that hard to plan because there are so many known expenses.

I’m happy to say I saved $19.99 today by redeeming a coupon for a free Delica lancing device! I love the freebies, particularly for something that I know will be put to great use.

Thanks for all the help and feedback Lorraine! I really appreciate it. What does one need to do to get a 3 month supply, just ask their doctor? The only 3 month supply things I get are my insulin pump infusion sets, reservoirs and IV Prep pads.

Oh! Is that not what you meant by mail order? We went through our insurance – a special application process – to get a mail order supply of insulin. Pods and sensors we get directly from the manufacturer in 3 month supplies, but the insulin was directly with our insurance. Perhaps that varies from provider to provider.

I think this is quite good + informative! (I chuckled at the first one regarding lancets but only because I use the accu check multiclix which comes with a drum consisting of 6 lancets + I still don’t even change that as often as I should!!) All the tips you listed are extremely helpful and most of them do work since I do some of them to save $$ myself (FSA account, 90 day supply of prescriptions). I think this would be great for people who may not know about these things.

Thank you Stacey! I just did my open enrollment and opted into the FSA and instantly saved myself $1k easy. I do need to look into the 90 day supply a bit more for myself. See I can learn things too. ;-) Thanks again for sharing!

I thought your saving money guide was REALLY good! The other thing I would add is keep to always keep your eyes open for free products at anywhere the big companies will be (i.e. JDRF walks, ADA walks, or any other diabetes booth friendly events talks, conferences, etc.). I’ve gotten free stuff so far that way,and I’ve only been diagnosed a year. They sometimes give out free low-carb noodles. I have also gotten to know the medtronic rep for my area and they have a great wealth of resources to get things cheaper or lower cost, and they give free samples too.
Anyway, I really liked your suggestions and I will implement them, even though we have great coverage at the moment.

It’s DEFINITELY helpful. I also agree with Leah in the sense that the events, conferences ,etc. could be useful.

Thanks Bita, I appreciate it! I am working on additional pages/resources to help identify upcoming events where you might get some of the samples. Stay tuned! Thanks again!

I had heard about re-using lancets from a friend. I had also heard of re-using the pump system more than once. My problem is getting the device to stick.

My insurance requires I use a mailorder pharmacy that they choose.

My DMS company is selected by them also. I will be eligible for Medicare in 15 months.

I elected out of the FSA when I went full time at the place I now work, due to the stipulations from my insurance.

I can understand the strips have an expiration date, but why would the pump and CGM supplies have one? Do they actually become ineffective at that time or shortly thereafter?

Hi Sharon,

Thanks for signing up! I reuse lancets and change them probably weekly. To answer your question, I bet the expiration on the CGM and Pump supplies is due to the substance they use to get it to adhere to your body. Over time it may become less effective. That’s just my guess. If there is ever anything I can help with, please let me know. All my best ~ Tony

Hi Tony

much of the information about saving money does not apply because in New Zealand medication etc is subsidized so no cost or minimal for insulin.

I don’t have a pump and not planning to use one. can see the advantage but also disadvantages so will continue to use lantus and humalog. definitely challenges when exercising.

Thanks Tony for the 7 ways to save money. Quite a lot of it we were doing anyway but it’s so good to hear that someone else does the same thing. Really appreciate Blogging Diabetes. It’s great.
