I’m going to be 100% completely honest with the upcoming statement.  I’ve read many stories, posts and tweets that talk about making sure you always have your blood glucose meter or testing supplies with you .  There have been those that panic when they don’t have their meter to test with.  So here’s my approach.

I can honestly say that I NEVER take my blood sugar meter with me unless I know it’s going to be a day long trip.  Even if I’m going out to dinner, I’ll test before I leave and run with it.  Going to the mall, test before I leave and head on out.  Going to the park, test before and go to the flipping park.  I tend to know when my sugar is low through the typical warning signs, which is different than those who sometimes can’t tell.

meter

Does this make me lazy?  Does this approach lead to poor diabetes management?  Am I setting a bad example by admitting this to you?  You know what?  I think I’m not alone.

Honestly, I used to be the same way. Ironically, the thing that made me change was getting a CGMS. Before, I would feel comfortable going untested for a few hours, but once I started getting readings every 5 minutes, I felt the need to corroborate/confirm any reading that didn’t look right, and always have a meter with me in case it asked for a callibration. I finger stick easily twice as much (some days much more) now that I have a CGM than I did before I got it (even though one of my main reasons for wanting one initially was to do LESS finger sticking).

Before I really paid attention to my diabetes about 5 yers ago, I didn’t even own a functional meter. I was really bad but since really coming into the light about my diabetes, there isn’t anywhere I go without it. Even if I am just running down to the corner store to pick up some milk, my messenger bag with all my supplies comes with me. I may be a little to anal about always having it with me bt maybe I am just compensating for all the years I was so bad.

To each his own. everyone is different.

Well for us it’s different. We always bring Tristan’s meter with us EVERYWHERE we go!!!! I would be in a panic if I didn’t have his meter with me.

Well the joys of being a woman is having large purses so it’s not a big deal to slip your meter in. But I do have a horrible confession to make – I never take any sugar with me when I go for a run outside. I know it’s soooo bad and I could get into a lot of uncessary trouble. But I am in such a routine in what I eat and how I exercise, that having a package of lifesavers in my hand while running is more of a hassle than help.

I definitely don’t feel that your being lazy for not bringing your meter everywhere. As long as you don’t forget to test whenever it is needed, I don’t see the problem of not bringing it with you.
However, for some people like myself who don’t seem to remember to test unless the object is right in front of me, it is absolutely necessary for me to bring it with me at all times. So overall, it really depends upon if the person is careless or not.

My husband has diabetes and just recently got a pump and CGM. He has tried jogging, but complains that the CGM doesn’t have a tight enough seal to his skin and wiggles loose while he runs. Any suggestions?
