Let me reiterate that I’m not a doctor and I don’t have any scientific data that explains what I am about to say.  I have neither collected data nor can guarantee these results.  As always, consult your physician before changing anything in your diet.

Back in September when I fell off of my diet wagon and began eating and drinking soda like it was going out of style, my blood sugars were high.  In the morning I had a very difficult time keeping my sugar below 200 between breakfast and lunch.  At bed time, my sugars were always pretty high probably from an oversized dinner.  During this period from September through the end of December, I was drinking one thing constantly; Diet Mountain Dew.

Diet Mt Dew

[source]

I would have a sugar free Monster or Rockstar drink in the morning and then drink Diet Mountain Dew all day long until dinner when I would stop for the evening.  By days end, I would probably come close to 2 liters per day.  It is very hard to tell, but I noticed that when I stopped drinking so much caffeine my sugars seemed to level out.  Granted, I also changed my diet shortly after, but the caffeine had multiple negative effects on the body.

  1. By drinking so much soda, I was drinking nearly zero water each day
  2. All of the caffeine was keeping me going during the day, but seriously crashing at night

When I was diagnosed I had a very easy time transitioning to diet soda because that’s really what I drank anyways.  I have heard from many diabetics and I think the general consensus is that you would have to pry the diet soda out of my cold, dead hands for me to give it up.  Up until now, I would have agreed.

I am going to say it right here and quite frankly; I think diet soda (not caffeine free) is one of the most detrimental things that a diabetic can consume outside of doing pure sugar shots.  I’m talking about the typical day to day things someone would eat or drink.  Sure there are other things that are hazardous, but you know what I’m talking about.  Also, I’m not talking about one diet soda here and there; I am talking about someone like me that obviously had a problem.  I will be the first to admit it.  I was addicted to Diet Mountain Dew.

One of the reasons I think drinking diet soda all day long, maybe at work, is such a problem is what happens afterwards.  When you need the energy to do something beneficial for yourself like exercise or spend time with the family, you have no energy.  The crash from no caffeine was so bad, that most nights I wanted to crawl into bed at 7:30 when we started to put our girls down for the evening.  Now with much more energy I might even sneak in a 45 minute workout at 11:00 at night.

I still haven’t completely given up caffeine. In the morning I am still drinking a Monster energy drink, but it’s all about baby steps, right?  The difference is that I am drinking at least a gallon of plain water each day after my morning jolt.  I feel energized and have a lot more motivation to workout at night instead of A) snacking and watching TV or B) going to bed from just being tired.

If you want to feel better, have more motivation and help your body stay clean, give up the soda for a glass or two of water.  It’s better for your kidneys, your skin and will help you out in the long term.  I’m not a doctor, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

Hey Tony – great post! I stopped drinking diet soda’s a few years ago. Not because of my diabetes tho’ – but because of cost, damage to teeth (even without sugar diet drinks are supposed to not be good for tooth enamel). I try to drink just plain ol’ water, and a blog like you helps remind me to get off my duff and get another glass. Tap water is fine for me depending on where I am at the time – e.g. in foreign countries in the south – bottled for me only! Putting a slice of lime / lemon in the water will sometimes makes it more “tasty” as well. Tried using the sugar free drink additives – but find they leave a weird coating on teeth – and they cost – plus there is alot of chemicals I can’t pronounce in how you get the taste LOL. Again, the recommendation of 8 glasses of water can be made up with juices (limit to what your diet allows you of course) – water in foods, etc. Glug, glug away to better health!

Anna – thank you for stopping by and leaving a comment. You bring up an excellent point about the fact that even diet soda can harm the enamel of your teeth. I am really trying to embrace the notion of clean eating and drinking, which tries to reduce the amount of artificial chemicals that are in my food and drinks. By drinking water, I feel my kidneys have a much better chance of holding up and keeping me healthy for the long term.

Thanks again!

I try and drink 64ozs of water throughout the day, but I will admit every night (or almost every night) I stop on my way home from school I get a large diet coke from Wendy’s. I don’t always drink it all, but I drink at least half. I feel like it is one of my few joys that I can still enjoy…

J’Lynn – I hear you and can definitely relate. That’s why I still have yet to give up my early morning energy drink. I am doing much better with drinking at least a gallon of water per day and cutting out the extra caffeine I was taking in. I think one can have a good balance and still be happy.

Thank you for the comment!

Lorraine – Thanks for stopping by and taking a minute to comment. I appreciate what you do and bring to the D-OC.

Tony-

I never was a big pop drinker but recently I’ve become one. I’m slowly going back to not dark pop. I was stressed and need something with am edge:) so diet pop was my drink of choice.I agree diet pop is terrible for the skin.

I’m glad that you notice that you had a problem with Mountain Dew and that you are doing something about it! :)

I have never and I mean never drank soda so I can’t relate to the addiction personally. But my husband use to drink a lot and it’s amazing the changes in him once he stopped.

Keep up the great work! :)

Cherise – I am with you on the non dark soda (pop). I was always a fan of clear diet soda for some unknown reason, which is why Diet Mt. Dew was my drink.

I think the stuff is bad, but as long as you are getting plenty of water and limiting the soda to early in the day, I think you’re good. This way at night you still have energy to get things done that really matter.

Rachel – WOW, you *never* drank soda? That’s impressive. I definitely knew I had a problem and also knew I was going to stop. Luckily I had (have) the will power to stop. There are times when I see the DMD and want it bad, especially when I do the shopping and it’s on sale. I just can’t see going back now that I feel so much better. Perfect example was last night when I started some cardio at 10:30 at night. Before, when I was all doped up on caffeine, I would have wanted to be in bed by 10:00.

Thank you both for the comments as it’s nice to know I’m not alone. Ciao.
