Some more detailed information for California residents:
Go to:
http://www.ciwmb.ca.gov/HHW/HealthCare/Collection/

Select the material type that you want to dispose.
Select the county in which you wish to dispose it.
Facility name is optional

I tried it selecting "any county" and it resulted in 598 sites in California that accept sharps from residents.

I hope this helps.

I completely agree, it's crazy! When we were living in FL, it was very easy, we got the container free of charge from any fire station and when they were full, we returned them.

Then we moved to NYS.... our doctor's office is in VT. They don't know what the policy is in NYS and after calling many people, we couldn't get a straight answer. We use coffee cans and then throw them in the trash.

Great post, very helpful info and the link that you included to get info is great! :)

Tony! Thank you soooo much for this info! I had NO idea! Years ago when I first began taking insulin, my CDE at the time gave me some information. That information had changed. So this time upon going on Byetta, I asked my NP, and she said just throw them in the trash.

I felt kinda funny doing that, and boom - here you are with some info to help me!

Appreciate the post!

With syringes I just put the orange caps back on an throw them in the trash. The trash guys don't even handle the trash they use a mechanical arm to pick up the trash bin. As far as I am concerned end of story. I would love to recycle them but that isn't an option.

Isn't it crazy Cara! I can't believe that there isn't a universal standard that everyone can work from. So best bet would be to get the puncture proof container and when it's full, secure it and throw in the regular trash.
