dreams

Diabetes is a serious chronic illness that affects so many people in this country and throughout the world.  I would be willing to bet that just about everyone knows someone that is or has been affected by Diabetes.  Some may say that their worst fear with diabetes is one of the following:

  • Coma from Hypoglycemia (low glucose) or Hyperglycemia (high glucose)
  • Feeling from ultra low blood sugar
  • Feeling from extremely high blood sugar
  • Having a low blood sugar in a remote area
  • Traveling to foreign countries
  • Having to start injections
  • Retinopathy
  • A1c results post Holidays
  • Ketoacidosis
  • Medical supply costs
  • Diabetes related complications – amputation, heart disease, blindness, kidney failure, etc.

Not me.  My biggest fear with Diabetes comes to mind when I look into the eyes of my 3 year old daughter.  The thought of her having to test her blood sugar levels, wear a pump or get daily injections is the one thing that scares the hell out of me.  The thought of her not being to enjoy “normal” childhood and teenage years without having to worry about her blood sugar, just kills me.  Now this isn’t the case yet.  She has not been diagnosed and hopefully never will be.  Regardless, it is without a doubt my biggest fear.  It’s not that I don’t fear some of these things, it is just that they aren’t at the top of the list.

Stay tuned – upcoming post will discuss my second biggest fear.
