On and off throughout the years, I have done a moderate amount of cardio, mostly in the form of running. This exercise typically consisted of me running at about 6 mph on a treadmill for roughly 30 minutes. I have never been interested in long distance running until recently when some of my friends have completed marathons in Baltimore, Chicago, D.C. and Boston. My thought process is that starting to run more and train like I would for a marathon would help me to have been control and stay in peak physical condition. After all, being healthy and in good health should reduce complications [diabetic related] down the road, right? Generally, my concerns are the following:
- What impact will this intense of exercise have on my blood sugar levels
- What do type 1 or 2 diabetics do to combat hypoglycemia when long-distance running
- In general, is it too risky to train this hard with diabetes
If anyone has experience in long distance running with type 1 diabetes and wants to share without commenting, please send me your contact information via my contact page.
